Interview with Angel Corella

Heartthrob Angel Corella graciously grants us an interview after his wonderful performance at the Orange County Performing Arts Center's presentation of KINGS OF DANCE. Here is a brief bio:
Angel Corella was born in Madrid in 1975. He began his ballet studies in Colmenar Viejo, and later studied in Madrid with Victor Ullate and Karemia Moreno. In 1991, Corella won First Prize in the National Ballet Competion of Spain. In 1994 he won the Grand Prix and Gold Medal at the Concours International de Danse de Paris. Corella joined American Ballet Theatre as a soloist in 1995 and was promoted to principal dancer in 1996. He appeared on television in a performance at the 1996 Kennedy Center Honors, and on an episode of Sesame Street in 1998. In 1999, Corella danced as a guest atist at the Gala for the opening of the re-furbished Royal Opera House, as well as with The Royal Ballet. He also danced as a guest artist with The Australian Ballet and at La Scala. In 2000, Corella won the Prix Benois de la Danse and, in 2003, recieved the National Award of Spain.

Angel Corella signing autographs as he works his way over to us. Ah! We're in luck.....I'll ask my most important question first, since I can see that we'll only have time for one:

GISELLE: "What would you say to parents who aren't sure about enrolling their child in a dance program, especially boys?"

CORELLA: "Dance is a profession like any other profession ie., lawyer, banker etc. I don't understand why anyone would have any hesitations. People need to educate themselves as to the background of what it's like.

"It's an undervalued profession. It is a profession however that is so rewarding and fullfilling! If a person feels it, it's in their spirit, their core....it's who they are. One cannot deny or inhibit another's essence of who they are or their calling. Again, it's about education".

Lucky girl Suzanne! It sure was worth the wait in the cold after the show to get this great memory!

Hey it's hard work to stay in your theater seat and watch all that great dancing! Great food after the show at Native Foods in Costa Mesa. Mmmm! Love that pesto, and Tanya's lasagna, and those chili fries and .....oh, everythings so yummy! (yes, I cropped myself out on purpose) :)
